COVID-19 / Coronavirus Update

We are living in unprecedented and uncertain times. On May 11, 2020, the Supreme Court of Georgia extended its order declaring a statewide judicial emergency to June 12, 2020. Under this order, most court functions will remain frozen until that date. This means that arraignments, motions hearings, and jury trials have all been postponed and will not move forward until the judicial emergency is lifted. Importantly for DUI cases, ALS hearings have also been postponed. Some essential court services, however, have continued and will continue to move forward. These include, for example:

  • Adult first appearances and bond hearings,
  • Temporary protective order (TPO) hearings, and
  • Juvenile detention hearings.

Statutes of limitations are being tolled, and filing deadlines are extended. Under the order, some proceedings may continue via telephone and/or video conference. It is important to keep in mind that Georgia judges are eager to reduce the jail populations in order to slow the spread of COVID-19. This means that they are far more likely to grant bond than they might be under normal circumstances. If your loved one is currently being held in a Georgia jail, you should contact a Georgia criminal defense attorney today.

How is my law office handling matters during COVID-19?

I am still working and am available to take your call, answer your questions, and investigate your case. I am communicating with prosecutors and judges for my clients who have asked me to negotiate plea deals or sentence reductions/modifications for them, which will move forward when the court system reopens. I am working hard to get clients who have been arrested out of jail on bond. I'm also taking the time to continue my legal education (as is required of all Georgia lawyers) and read up on the latest Georgia case law in order to be the most effective advocate on behalf of my clients.
